Today is one of the largest online giving events of the year, Give to the Max Day! To celebrate this day full of generosity and giving, hear from a few of our students and friends of LCM-TC on what makes this such a special and needed community on campus and how your support makes this ministry happen. Visit our Give to the Max Day profile to give from now through the end of Thurs., Nov. 14.

Viola El-Afandi, LCM Student

Viola is a sophomore involved with LCM, who is also a naturalist, baker, violinist, and folk music enthusiast. She studies lion behavior and ecology, is a natural history educator, reads too much, and tends to get caught in thought spirals.

“I think LCM gets its vitality from the curiosity that it fosters. In worship, we’re encouraged not only to hear the Word, but also to think about what it means in the context of when it was written and in the world today. Instead of avoiding ideas that we find challenging in scripture and theology, we confront them. It’s an awfully dangerous thing for a church not to raise questions about its purpose and principles, for those questions are what reaffirm how we, as people of faith, find community with God and with each other.” -Viola El-Afandi

Haley Renner, LCM Student Leader

Haley is a sophomore studying Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Deviance, is an LCM student leader this year and hails from Lakeville, MN. She works at two cafes on campus and loves being a barista. She spends her extra time relaxing, playing guitar and singing, as well as drawing, and seeing her friends and family.

“At the beginning of freshman year, I had almost completely lost who I was. I had absolutely no regard for the quality of my relationships and I put everything I cared about on the back burner. LCM really helps me to stay grounded, connect with my values, and keep in contact with God and myself.” -Haley Renner

Dr. Doug Hartmann, LCM Supporter

Doug is a Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Minnesota. He has served on the LCM-TC board and is a member at University Lutheran Church of Hope. As a professor, he regularly teaches the sociology Senior Capstone class. It is in this context that he witnesses the desire that undergraduates have for finding meaning, purpose and vocation.

“The University of Minnesota is one of the largest Lutheran universities in the world. LCM provides a concrete presence for these students to connect with that tradition and its powerful, welcoming way of thinking about the Gospel in the world. Even for those who don’t become active directly themselves, LCM provides a witness to the power of a faith-centered vision of learning and engagement on campus.” -Dr. Doug Hartmann

  • Advent Day 7 // "Advent is a period of preparation for Christmas but, unlike Lent, it is not a period of penance. It is a period that focuses us on joy...We learn the joy of anticipation, the joy of delighting in a sense of the presence of God all around us, the joy of looking for the second coming of Christ, the joy of living in the surety of even more life in the future." —Joan Chittister
  • Advent Day 5 // "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." - Albus Dumbledore in JK Rowling's "Harry Potter"
  • Advent Day 4 // All earth is hopeful, the Savior comes at last!
Furrows lie open for God’s creative task:
This, the labor of people who struggle to see
How God’s truth and justice set everybody free.

We first saw Jesus a baby in a crib.
This same Lord Jesus today has come to live
In our world; he is present, in neighbors we see
Our Jesus is with us, and ever sets us free. (verses 1 & 4 of "Toda la Tierra" by Alberto Taulé)
  • Advent Day 3 // Blessing for Waiting // "Who wait
for the night
to end

bless them.

Who wait
for the night
to begin

bless them.

Who wait
in the hospital room
who wait
in the cell
who wait
in prayer

bless them.

Who wait
for news
who wait
for the phone call
who wait
for a word

who wait
for a job
a house
a child

bless them.

Who wait
for one who
will come home

who wait
for one who
will not come home

bless them.

Who wait with fear
who wait with joy
who wait with peace
who wait with rage

who wait for the end
who wait for the beginning
who wait alone
who wait together

bless them.

Who wait
without knowing
what they wait for
or why

bless them.

Who wait
when they
should not wait
who wait
when they should be
in motion
who wait
when they need
to rise
who wait
when they need
to set out

bless them.

Who wait
for the end
of waiting
who wait
for the fullness
of time
who wait
emptied and
open and
ready

who wait
for you,

o bless." —Jan Richardson
  • Advent Day 2 // Some of our student leaders and staff curated a playlist for the season! Check it out in the link in our bio.
Light some candles and watch the light grow. Throw on some tunes. Take a moment to journal or just simply rest. Walk through the winter wonderland of campus. Watch for signs of hope, joy, wonder, and awe—where God is at work in the world. Whatever your Advent practices are, we hope they bring you peace and respite as you prepare for the end of the semester and the birth of Christ Jesus.
  • Advent Day 1 // As we begin our daily reflections together in this Advent season, we would like to extend this invitation into the season, written by Ben Stewart when he was a pastor at Holden Village in the early 2000’s: "As the green of summer begins to wilt in cold November, tired and somewhat spent, as we look for a needed boost of energy from the outside, the winter sky takes on a deep midnight blue, the color of longing, as the sun sinks low on the southern horizon and we look for the One who will come to renew our wilting and darkening world. It is the season of Advent.

This is the season for mystics, for those who search the stars and the sky for signs of hope and promise in the deep blue winter. John the Baptizer thunders out his wild cry for justice and cosmic awareness; Joseph is awakened in the night with strange dreams of angels; Jesus speaks of visions of a world roused from sleep to watch for the coming of God. We are called to watch and wait in the wilderness, gathered around the mysterious fire of Advent to look for the signs and wonders of God.

Nestled into the cold dark night, under the drape of the deep blue sky, in what ways have you been lulled to sleep? What shooting stars and signs in the heavens might you wake up to see? Or are you tired with watching and waiting for the coming of God? Are you frightened or discouraged by the silence of the cold winter darkness? As we put on the deep blue robe of Advent and light the candles to watch in the night, what might God be waking you to see? What might you miss if you do not watch and wait?”
